Have you noticed how much sickness and malady is abounding in our world? For this reason we have so many remedies being set forth. Many of these medicines and remedies are good and help in alleviating the discomfort of sickness or disease. But have you noticed the side effects of some of the treatments? One wonders, sometimes, if the remedy is worse than the disease. That being said, we are thankful for all the medicines and treatments which are available and do help many who have sicknesses. But I would like to propose an approach not to replace good medicine but to enhance good medicine. It is a foundation for good health that is set forth in the greatest book ever written, The Bible.
In the Bible, Jesus said, “By your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” That is a powerful statement. Listen to what it says in Proverbs. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” These are potent statements. Why would this great book put so much emphasis on words. Let us see the foundation for such a statement.
In the beginning
In the beginning The Bible assumes God. That is an “a priori” assumption. It is assumed as fact. All world views have ” an “a priori” beginning. Beginning in verse 3 of Genesis we read “and God said”. Verse 6 continues, “and God said”. Verse 9 quotes, “And God said,”. Then in verse 11, “Then God said.” Verse 14 echoes again, “Then God said.” As we continue on to verse 20 we read, “Then God said.” Verses 24 and 26 resound again, “Then God said.” I believe you can see the point. It is probably best stated in The New Testament in the book of Hebrews where it says, “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.”
Going back to the beginning again, God says this of His highest creation, man, “Let Us make man in our image”. So it is that we have attributes which the Creator Himself has and has given them to us. The most important of these is “words” which we speak. None of the other creatures communicate with words as man does.
God, Who is all powerful, all knowing and ever present exercised His word and it was instantaneous. The scripture says it this way. “And God said……And it was.” It was as if it had always been. What God says always happens. When Jesus came in the flesh to reveal God to us He gave us understanding as to how words work for men who have marred the image which God originally placed in him. Jesus said words are like seeds that are planted. Now, Jesus gave the example using the Word of God as the seed. When place in good soil and cultivated the seed will always bring forth a crop. I learned that growing up and also as an adult. I planted some corn seeds in a place I prepared for it. I did not get a crop the next day but as I cultivated and watered it little sprigs began to come up out of the ground. Then in a few weeks stalks with leaves were evident. At the end of about three months I had a couple of hundred ears of corn which my family enjoyed for many months. If I had not planted the seeds, I would not have reaped the crop. Words that you speak are seeds that are planted.
By Your Words
Let us look again at Jesus statement. “By your words you will be justified and by your words you will be condemned.” This is, of course, relating to final judgment. But God’s Word is always relevant. In Galatians 6:7 the Word of God says, “whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”
Let us insert some words which fit into the categories mentioned and see what it says. “By your words you will be healthy and by your words you will be sickly.” “By your words you will be blessed and by your words you will be cursed.” By your words you will be prosperous and by your words you will in poverty.” We could go on and on but I think you can see what I am saying.
Let me give you a true life illustration. In the 1990s I began to grow in this understanding of the Word of God. I began to speak out loud day by day the Word of God about health and prosperity. At that time I was financially destitute. My need at that time was financial. As I planted God’s Word in regard to finances I saw things begin to turn around and my finances improved and continued to improve. As I stated, I was confessing God’s Word about my health as well. I was in great health and was far more vigorous than the average man my age. However, in 2002 I began to lose my energy level and decided to check in at the VA hospital in our town. Though I was low in energy I drove myself in and went to the emergency room. After running some preliminary tests, they drew some blood and sent it to the lab to run tests on it. In a little while the lab sent and asked for another sample. There was an anomaly in the first test. A little while later the head of the lab came down to the emergency room. The doctor asked what the problem was. The lab technician said that he just wanted to come down and see the “dead” man from whom they had drawn the blood. He showed the doctor the read out that showed that I did not have enough blood platelets to be alive. He had never seen a living person with that low of a reading.
My confession had been for years that “God’s Word is health to my flesh and strength to my bones. He heals all my diseases and redeems my life from destruction.” I submitted to the treatments that they prescribed. They said that I would have side effects and would be susceptible to infection or disease for months after the treatment. I know that they are good doctors and nurses and I thank God for them, but the Word of God is true and He always does what He says. I have had a couple of runny noses in fifteen years but that is all. The cancer that I had has been totally defeated by the Word of God.
The reason for my healing was that God’s Word bore the fruit that it brings forth when it is sewn.
I thank God for doctors. But doctors can only treat symptoms. If you have planted beans the doctor can not get you a crop of corn. What I am saying is, if the words which come out of your mouth is continually speaking sickness and death, do not expect a crop of health and vigor. Do not be deceived. Even a good doctor will tell you that a positive outlook and positive statements will go a long way toward the healing process.
What I do encourage you to do is “guard your mouth”. Be aware of the words that you speak. You will probably be amazed at what comes out of your mouth if you take time to listen to yourself as you speak. I will encourage you to find out what your Creator has said about you and then begin to plant those words into your life everyday. Speak them out loud, even if you have to get away by yourself.
When you speak God’s Word, He is listening. And He promises “It will not return void, but it will accomplish what it says.”
